about

Holbeck Moor, Leeds, 1936 was where the British Union of Fascists, let by Oswald Mosley, were sent packing by the people of Leeds. This was about two weeks before the famous Battle of Cable Street in London, where they were also met with strong opposition.

I recorded the song at home and played all the instruments, apart from the fiddle by Niles Krieger (THE OFTEN HERD). It will have a vinyl and CD release in spring 2024 on local independent label Shed Load Records : Shed Load Records

lyrics

HOLBECK MOOR

Did you hear about the fight when the fascists came to town?
They dared to show their faces but were quickly turned around
By a brass-necked bunch who all lived round here
Thousands strong, boys, didn't you hear?
It was Holbeck Moor, 1936, the lads went out with stones and sticks
To unify in the face of hate, to stand as one and to seal their fate.

When the Blackshirts came, people organised
Thousands marching side by side
When the Blackshirts showed their faces in Leeds
They sent those fascists to their knees.

Word got round through nod and wink
From the factory floor to the kitchen sink
Bottles, stones and fists were thrown
Bloodied faces and broken bones.

Three arrested on that day
Told off in court and sent away
The Judge, well he must have understood
No-one cries over spilt fascist blood.
